Why I Started Selling Online Instead of Through Galleries
Galleries are intermediaries.
They take a percentage, they decide what gets shown, they have their own relationships with buyers. That's fine. It works for a lot of artists.
It wasn't working for me.
I wanted to talk directly to the person who was going to wear the scarf. I wanted to know who was buying and why. I wanted to be able to tell the story myself instead of having someone else tell a version of it.
Selling online means I'm responsible for everything. The photography, the copy, the shipping, the customer service. That's a lot of work for one person.
But it also means I know exactly who has these scarves. Some of them have written to me. Some of them have sent photos. That doesn't happen when you sell through a gallery.
I'll take the extra work.
