What Is Wearable Art?

Wearable art is art that goes on your body instead of a wall.

That's the short answer. The longer one involves what it means for something to be art in the first place, which is a conversation that's been going on for a long time and probably won't be resolved here.

What I can say is what I mean by it in the context of these scarves.

Each one started as a painting. A real painting, made by hand, on paper. That painting got photographed and printed on silk. The original no longer exists. The scarf is what's left of it.

So when someone wears one of these, they're wearing a record of a specific painting that was made one time and is now gone. That feels like art to me. Not art-inspired or art-adjacent. The actual thing.

Whether someone else calls it that is up to them.
