Scarf, Shawl or Wrap: Which Do You Need?
The words get used loosely, but they usually mean different sizes and uses.
- Scarf: smaller, worn around the neck.
- Shawl: larger, worn over the shoulders, often folded into a triangle.
- Wrap: the largest, worn around the upper body like a light layer.
Most people don't want three separate pieces. They want one that can do all three.
That comes down to size and fabric. A 52 by 52 inch square is big enough to be a shawl or a wrap, and it still folds down into a neck scarf. A soft fabric like silk-wool or silk chiffon drapes well in each of those shapes.
So if you're not sure which you need, get one large square. Wear it as a scarf on a cold morning, a shawl over a dress at dinner and a wrap on a cool night.
