Is a Silk-Wool Scarf Warm Enough for Winter?
Here's the plain answer: a silk-wool scarf is made for fall, cool spring days and mild winter days. In deep cold, it works best as a layer with a warm coat, not as your only protection.
My silk-wool is 70% wool and 30% silk. The wool holds heat. The silk keeps it soft and light. Because it's a large 52 inch square, you can wrap it more than once, which adds warmth when you need it.
Where it's at its best:
- Fall and early winter, with or without a coat
- Cold offices, trains and restaurants
- Over a coat on a windy day, to cover the neck
On the coldest days, wear it wrapped close at the neck under your coat collar. It seals the gap where cold air gets in.
If you live somewhere with long, hard winters, think of it as the scarf you wear the most days of the year, not the one you wear on the single coldest day.
