How to Frame a Silk Scarf
A silk scarf is a flat piece of art. Framed, it hangs like a painting. These are the questions people ask most before doing it.
Can you frame a silk scarf?
Yes. Silk frames well as long as it's mounted without glue and protected from sunlight. Done right, a framed scarf lasts for decades.
Is it bad to frame a silk scarf?
Only if it's done carelessly. The things that damage silk are glue, tape, and direct sunlight. Avoid those and framing protects the scarf better than a drawer does.
What size frame do you need for a silk scarf?
Choose a frame with an opening a little larger than the scarf, so the rolled hem shows and nothing is hidden. For a 24" square, that means an opening of at least 25" x 25". For a 52" square, at least 53" x 53", which is usually a custom order. Measure the wall before ordering.
How do you mount a silk scarf without glue?
Two common ways:
- Hand stitching. The scarf is sewn with a few loose stitches to a fabric-covered, acid-free board. This is what most framers do and it's fully reversible.
- Archival pins. Stainless pins hold the edges to a padded board. Faster, also reversible.
Either way, the silk should lie flat without being stretched tight.
What color backing should you use?
It depends on the fabric.
- Silk chiffon is sheer, so the backing shows through and changes how the colors look. White or cream keeps them true. A darker backing deepens them.
- Silk-wool is opaque, so the backing color barely shows.
Hold the scarf against a few backing samples before deciding. See both fabrics up close.
What kind of glass is best?
UV-filtering glass or acrylic. Sunlight fades silk over time, and UV glass slows that down. For a large frame, acrylic is lighter and safer to hang. Even with UV protection, hang the frame out of direct sun.
Should the edges show?
Yes. The rolled hem is part of the piece, and the point of framing is to see the whole artwork, edge to edge. Folding the edges under hides part of it.
Can you frame it yourself or do you need a framer?
A 24" scarf is manageable at home with a ready-made frame, acid-free board, and a needle and thread. A 52" scarf is easier to get right with a framer, mostly because of the size of the glass and backing.
How much does it cost to frame a silk scarf?
A ready-made frame for a smaller scarf can be done for under $100. Custom framing for a large square with UV glass usually runs several hundred dollars, depending on the frame and where it's done. Getting quotes from two framers is worth it.
Can you take a scarf out of the frame and wear it again?
Yes, if it was stitched or pinned. That's the main reason to avoid glue. Some people rotate: wear a scarf for a season, frame it for the next.
Where should a framed scarf hang?
Anywhere without direct sun or humidity. Avoid bathrooms and walls that get afternoon light. A hallway, bedroom, or living room wall away from windows works well.
What about the small tea print that comes with the scarf?
Every order over $50 includes a signed original 4×6" tea print. It fits a standard 5×7" frame with a mat and hangs well next to the scarf it came from.
Which scarves frame best?
Scarves with a strong design across the whole square. Each Teascarf Brooklyn scarf is made from an original tea-printed artwork, so the full square reads as a single piece of art on the wall. Rare Earth in silk-wool is a good example: rust and gold across the full 52".
