What Size Silk Scarf Should You Buy?

Silk scarves come in two meaningful sizes: a small square around 24" and an oversized square around 52". They're not interchangeable. Here's how to choose.

The 24" small square

This is the most versatile size. It's small enough to tie at the neck without adding bulk, light enough to wear in the hair, and easy to wrap around a bag handle. It doesn't drape over the shoulders or wrap around your body. It's an accent piece, not a layer.

Choose the 24" if you want to:

  • Wear it at the neck with a crew or V-neck
  • Tie it in your hair or around a ponytail
  • Attach it to a bag handle
  • Wear it at the wrist like a bracelet
  • Use it as a pocket square in a blazer

Teascarf Brooklyn small scarves are 24x24". See all small scarves ($79 in silk chiffon, $89 in silk-wool).

The 52" oversized square

This is a different object. It can do everything the 24" can do at the neck, but it can also wrap around your body, drape over both shoulders as a shawl, or be folded into a wide sash at the waist. It's a real layer, warm enough in silk-wool for a cold day.

Choose the 52" if you want to:

  • Drape it over your shoulders at dinner or an event
  • Wrap it around your neck two or three times for warmth
  • Wear it as a shawl over a coat
  • Fold it as a sash over a dress or trousers
  • Wear it as a full head wrap

Teascarf Brooklyn oversized scarves are 52x52". See all oversized scarves ($175 in silk chiffon, $195 in silk-wool).

Which size should you start with?

If you already own scarves and want something you'll wear every day, the 24" is the easier choice. If you want a statement piece for fall and winter that can replace a wrap or a shawl, the 52" is the one to get.

If you're not sure, many people buy both in the same design. Two or more pieces get 15% off the whole order.
