How to Find a Scarf That Isn't Floral

Search for a patterned scarf and you'll mostly find flowers. Roses, peonies, small repeating blossoms. If that isn't your style, the options get thin fast.

What you're usually looking for is pattern without a subject. Something with texture and color that doesn't spell out a picture.

That's what tea gives me. I make each design by steeping tea, arranging it on paper and letting it dry. The tea leaves marks, edges and color shifts I can't fully plan. The result is abstract. It reads as texture and tone, not as flowers or shapes.

Rare Earth is a good example. It's rust, slate and cream, with soft blotches and fine edges where the tea dried. Up close it looks like weathered stone or old paper. From across a room it reads as warm, muted color.

If you want a scarf with interest but no flowers, look for abstract prints made from a real material or process. They tend to feel quieter and more personal.
