Why Brooklyn Is the Right Place to Make This
I've been in Brooklyn since before it was the thing it became.
It's a good place to make things. There are other people making things here. You see them. You run into them. It keeps you honest about what you're doing and why.
The light here is particular. The density is particular. The way the borough sits between water and the city gives it a quality that shows up in the work whether you intend it or not.
Rare Earth looks like Brooklyn to me. The colors of old buildings, oxidized metal, late fall light. I didn't set out to paint Brooklyn. It came through anyway.
I don't know if I'd make the same work somewhere else. Probably not exactly the same.
The artwork is made here. The silk is printed elsewhere. Both things are true and both matter.
