How to Get Wrinkles Out of a Silk Scarf
Silk wrinkles easily, especially after a knot or a long day folded in a bag. The good news is that it also releases wrinkles easily, with a little steam or gentle heat. Here are four ways, from easiest to most thorough.
1. Hang it in a steamy bathroom
Hang the scarf on a padded hanger or over the shower rod, away from the water. Run a hot shower with the door closed for ten minutes. The steam relaxes light wrinkles without any heat touching the fabric. Let it dry fully before you wear it.
This is the gentlest method and works for most everyday creases.
2. Use a handheld steamer
A steamer is the best tool for silk. Set it to low. Hang the scarf, hold the steamer a few inches away, and move it slowly from top to bottom. Never press the steamer head against the silk, and don't let it drip. Water spots can mark silk.
3. Iron it on the silk setting
If you use an iron:
- Set it to the silk or lowest setting. Turn steam off.
- Lay the scarf flat on the ironing board, print side down.
- Place a thin cotton cloth, like a pillowcase or a handkerchief, over the scarf.
- Press gently, lifting and setting the iron down rather than sliding it.
- Let the scarf cool flat before you fold or wear it.
Never iron silk directly, and never spray water on it. Direct heat can scorch silk and leave a shine on the fabric.
4. Let a professional do it
For deep creases, or a scarf you're nervous about, take it to a dry cleaner and ask for a press only. It's inexpensive and quick.
Silk chiffon vs. silk-wool
Silk chiffon is light and sheer, so it responds fast to steam. Use the lowest setting and keep the steamer moving.
Silk-wool holds wrinkles less than pure silk, thanks to the wool, and usually only needs a quick steam. Don't press hard on the herringbone weave. Pressure flattens its texture.
How to prevent wrinkles
- Untie knots as soon as you take the scarf off.
- Store it rolled or loosely folded, not tightly creased.
- Hang it overnight after wearing so it can relax.
- When traveling, roll it and pack it on top.
