How Big Should a Scarf Be to Drape Over Your Shoulders?
To drape over both shoulders and still hang in front, a scarf needs to be large. Most regular scarves are too narrow. They sit on the neck and stop there.
A good size for draping is a square of about 50 inches or more. My oversized scarves are 52 by 52 inches. That's enough to:
- Fold into a triangle and wear over the shoulders like a shawl
- Wrap around the neck more than once
- Open fully and wear as a light wrap over a dress
A square also gives you more options than a long, narrow scarf. You can fold it smaller for a neck scarf or open it up when you want coverage.
If you want one scarf that can do all of that, start with the size. Pattern and color matter, but a scarf that's too small will only ever be worn one way.
The smaller 24-inch versions are better for tying at the neck or on a bag.
